On 11/24/13 I had the both the pleasure and displeasure of going on a Sea Life Paulagic trip out of Freeport, NY.
First the displeasure. As many of you know, I don’t do very well in the morning as 3 am is my normal bedtime. On this trip I had to be at the dock at 5:30 am. The trip back was pretty difficult as we were heading into a stiff headwind and the sea was swelling. Lots of people lost their cookies. Fortunately I don’t get seasick but it was still pretty rough.
Now for the pleasure. The ride out (about 40 miles) was pretty easy with lots of birds coming into the chum slick. We were treated to Northern Fulmar, Great Shearwater and Iceland Gull. We had multiple of each species (see images below). The we I refer to were lots of good friends on board including David Speiser, Tom Burke and one of our leaders, Doug Gochfeld. In spite of the rough return we all had a really good time.
